The cost of living
Life shouldn't be this unaffordable
Everyone should be able to afford to live here, and right now too many Tennesseans can't, whether they're working full time, working part time, raising kids, or retired.
Tennessee still taxes the food on your table, and every bill to end that tax has died in committee.
Instead, Republicans voted in 2024 to refund $1.4 billion to corporations. Time after time, they put big money ahead of the families paying the bills.
- Abolish the grocery tax. No one should pay a tax to feed their family
- Repeal the 2023 ban on local wage and benefit rules
- Tax credits for small businesses that pay a living wage
- Paid family leave for everyone, not just state employees
Housing you can afford
Rent shouldn't eat your whole paycheck
Rent keeps climbing and paychecks aren't keeping up. Too many people here are working hard and still can't afford a place to rent, let alone buy a home of their own.
Tennessee law ties the hands of cities and counties on rent, and Republicans haven't done a thing about it. Since 2016, a city here can't require even one affordable unit in a new development. Then the Republican supermajority cut $90 million meant to help people buy a first home from the budget, two years in a row.
- Ban landlords from setting rents with price-fixing software
- Restore the $90 million Republicans cut and expand down payment help so first-time buyers can buy a home and build a future for their family
- Put real money into the Tennessee Housing Trust Fund to build homes people can afford
Healthcare you can reach
No one should skip the doctor because they can't pay
One company, Ballad Health, controls almost every hospital bed in Northeast Tennessee. The state handed them that monopoly in 2018, and families in Washington County have paid for it ever since.
In 2023 Ballad failed to improve on 75 of the 83 measures the state tracks, and more of its patients ended up back in the hospital after being sent home. The state responded by lowering the passing score from 85 to 70, then skipping the scoring altogether in 2025.
- Break up the Ballad Health monopoly
- Expand Medicaid so Tennesseans can see a doctor
- Restore the quality standards the state quietly lowered
- Protect IVF, birth control, and women's reproductive rights
Strong public schools
Every kid deserves a great education
Republicans are sending your tax dollars to private schools. Their voucher program took $145.9 million out of the General Fund in its first year, and this spring they voted to make it even bigger.
- End vouchers for good and put every dollar into the public schools building our kids' future
- Raise teacher pay so our best teachers don't leave for other states or other jobs
- Fund classrooms so teachers stop buying supplies out of their own pocket
- End child hunger with free breakfast and lunch for every student
- Universal pre-K for every 4-year-old whose family needs it
Government surveillance
Nobody voted for cameras tracking your every move
AI cameras across Washington County keep a searchable record of everywhere you drive: your plate, your car's make, model, and color, even your bumper stickers.
We were told outside agencies could not search it. In one month, police departments ran over a million searches against Johnson City's cameras. 95% came from outside Tennessee.
- Take down every AI camera watching Washington County's roads and neighborhoods
- Require a warrant before police can conduct searches on private citizens
- Make it illegal for anyone to sell or share your personal data
- Ban AI surveillance cameras and drones across Tennessee
